Ten Year-old Qinhong Chen Sweeps, Ruge and Navarro Tie
Twenty players participated in the ChessPalace Octos today (which
actually made two decas). The strong top group was made up of
eight Class A, an expert, and master Edison Ruge. The latter and
Nicanor Navarro finished with 2.5 splitting first ($120) and second
($50) place. Joseph Bellinger finished clear third and had a choice
of any new book from the shelf. In the second group, ten year-old
Qinhong Chen swept with 3-0 beating Kele Perkins 2-1 (second-place
finisher) in the final round. Richard Martin, 2-1 also finished
in second place after bouncing back from a first round loss.
We must note that the four youngest player in the tournament
are all ten years old including Daniel Lin (1811), Shyam Gandhi
(1802), $120-winner Qinhong Chen (1695), and Craig Hilby (1673).
All four are in the top 40 of their age group in the United States!
