2006 Junior Open Attracts Top Chess Stars and Newcomers

The 2006 Chesspalace Junior Championship held on December 10, 2006 hosted by Chesspalace, Southern California’s premier chess club, attracted 42 juniors. Topping a very strong field in the advance section was up and coming junior star, Austin Hughes. Following him were Anderson Ju, Brett Gonzales, and Christopher Kao who all tied for 2nd place with 3 points. Austin Hughes will hold the 2006 title as Chesspalace Junior Champion until next year’s championship.
The rated beginner section saw Daniel Lin, another up and coming chess whiz, edged Jonathan Chen who received the second prize. Zak Dossi, Andrew Alameida, and Giovanni Lemus tied for the third place.

In the unrated advance section, Justin Kao took home the gold followed by Tim Chou and Emilio Rodriguez. Oscar Magana and Joshua Gomez won fourth and fifth place trophy prizes respectively.

Edgar Alonso went undefeated in the unrated beginner section. Alison Chou, Leon Kyseler, Sebastian Petcu, and Oscar Viella won the last four trophy prizes.

In the next section, Knights II, three brothers, Mitchell, Marco, and Matteo Miralaie swept the field by taking 1st, 2nd, and the last one sharing third place respectively. Newcomer Salem Munos was the only who prevented the Miralaie brothers from a clean sweep by sharing the third place prize with Matteo.
In the K-3rd, Pawns section, another newcomer 5 year-old Shyam Gandhi scored 4.5 out of 5 to clinch his first place championship trophy of what is bound to be the start of a fantastic chess career!
