2005 Winter Scholastics Championship The first Chesspalace scholastic event of the year kicked off successfully on February 12th, 2005. A total of 31 students participated in the three sections for beginners, intermediate, and advance level players. In the Rooks (advance) section, Brett Gonzales and Aaron Ong went home as co-champions with their 4.5 out of 5 scores. Following at second was Ashkon Soroudi and Caleb Mangohig. This year's top section saw one of the toughest composite of chess whizzes competing for the top prize. In the Knights section, Mike Frankenberg and Cheston Gunawan also were co-champions with 4.5 out of 5 scores. Following them was Douglas Griffin with 4.0 out of 5. An additional award went to Geofrey Knopf for the best beginner performance. In the Pawns section, Brad Gonzales, a 1st grader and also the brother of Brett Gonzales, the Rook's co-champion, took home the first place trophy with an exceptional 4.5 out of 5 score. Following him was a three way tie among Noah LaBarba, Yechan Lee, and Andrew Ascencio. Congratulations to everybody for participating in one of the toughest Championship we have ever seen.
