THANKSGIVING SCHOLASTIC CHAMPIONSHIP
The Thanksgiving Scholastic Championship held on November 20, 2004 saw Ashwin
Devendran capturing the championship title with a perfect 5-0 score. Following
him was Frank Castellanos, from the Boys and Girls Club of Burbank team, with
4-1 and Benjamin Quincey with 3.5-1.5.
In the Knights (intermediate) section Angel Fiorito took home the top prize. Following him was Sathiyaa Balachandran, the only girl in the event, with a score of 3-2. Another representative of the Boys and Girls Club of Burbank, Jorge Torres finished with 3rd place.
In the Pawns (beginner's) section, Douglas Griffin edged
out Ashmit Adarsh took take home the first place trophy. At third was Spencer
Ytuarte.
Besides the top 3 prizes, much fanfare and surprises
awaited our chess players throughout the day. Raffle prizes were distributed
in between the rounds. In addition, tournament organizer, Mr. "Dan",
awarded all the contestants who played all their games a chess medal.
Alivar Chowdhury and Ye Chan Lee also won the best sportmanship awards given
by Chesspalace.
Special thanks to Chesspalace for graciously volunteering their facility to
host this event. Also special thanks deserves to go to Kevin Bulone, director
of the Games and Recreation of the Boys and Girls Club of Burbank, for his selfless
support of his kids in their chess endeavors.
