Eric Lu scored an undefeated 4.0/4 to claim the first ChessPalace Scholastic event of the year, the New Year's Scholastic. Noah Gin finished second with 3.0/4 with the only loss to the champion. Leo Peng finished third with 2.0/4 to round out the Open winners. Gabriel Sam finishes another stellar performance with 3.0/4 taking the Best U1200 award. There was a three-way for the U1000; Cassidy Van Vooren, Shrinidhi Jayakumar, and Carson Van Vooren all finished as co-champions, but Cassidy took home the first place trophy with a higher tiebreak followed by Shrinidhi and Carson.
In the U500, Marc Eftimie finished with 3.0/4 including two upsets. His post rating is now over 500! Marc also found success in his last tournament, Regionals III. Second place went to Mara Eftimie with 2.0/4 followed by Andrew Eftimie. The Eftimie kids are working hard on their chess and it surely paid off. The Best U800 went to Max Peng and Best U300 to Siddhesh Jayakumar. Additional mention to this report is Adriana Perkins, Best Unrated, who played in her second tournament including a game where she was up several pieces in the opening against a much higher rated opponent before blundering into mate. Her brother, Joaquin Perkins, is several times National Champion. Adriana is surely following the right footsteps.
Thirteen players participated in ChessPalace' first scholastic event of the year. The event ran smoothly with no problems and the last round started right on schedule with the awards ceremony finishing earlier than expected. An improtant note to this event is there were no draws. All 28 games played were decisive, now that's fighting chess!
