King reigns in the 6-Pak A, Chaney and Shuben tie in B
Alex King swept a strong field that comprised NM Jeff Phillips, newly minted NM, Pablo Pena, young experts Simone Liao and Craig Hilby, and a few of strong Class A players. A new NM himself, King beat his fellow masters in the second and third round. Pena and Liao tied for second. In the B group, Merril Chaney and Matthew Shuben tied with 2.5/3 each after a last round draw. Zachary Chandler finished second. The 6-Pak event actually had eight players in each section, instead of the traditional six.
ChessPalace wins the 2012 edition of Club Match
ChessPalace edged La Palma, San Diego, and Hemet Chess Club in this year's edition of the Club Match Championship. ChessPalace's victorious matches against Hemet and La Palma came within just half a point each and the victory against San Diego was won by only one and a half points. Runner-up club, La Palma finish with 1.5/3 match points. La Palma routed San Diego, who routed Hemet, but Hemet drew their match against La Palma and was half a point from drawing against ChessPalace. Recap and Pictures
Food, prizes, and lots of chess! IM Amanov, 21st Anniversary champion.
ChessPalace celebrated its 21st Anniversary on Sunday August 14th. Established in 1990, the chess club continues to march with a friendly atmosphere and competitive tournaments. Both strong players and strong supporters alike enjoyed the five round tournament filled with raffles and prizes. The event was won by IM Zhanibek Amanov with 4.5/5 and in the scholastic, Siddarth Somasundaram swept the 14-player field with 5/5! More than 50 players joined in on the celebration and competitive chess, which included 4 masters, 5 experts, 10 class-A, 9 class-B, 5 class-C, 6 class-D and -E, and 14 scholastic juniors. Nic Reiner takes July Open crown
Reiner knocked off last month's champion in round 3 of the 4-round event. Despite losing in the last round, Reiner was still the clear winner of this month's Open with 3.0/4. National Master Jeff Phillips finished half a point behind at 2.5/4. Along the way, Reiner earned 47 rating points. Two sections were formed for this event and Alan Chu won clear first in the second group with 3.0/4 as well. Eric Pangilanan finished second with 2.5/4.
